This writing assignment asks that you answer a question that will pertain to the relationship between body, politics, and space/place. Please review the course’s core questions and topics and choose something that interests you. This paper must reflect a sophisticated grasp of the relevant course texts but will be primarily an argumentative paper.
Approx. 5-7 pages double-spaced. 12-point font, Times New Roman, Chicago style formatting (citations). A clear thesis and ‘roadmap’ explaining how you will address the question. You must include a bibliography. For the final paper, the goal is not to do a close reading of one particular text.
Instead, you will be analyzing your chosen theme in relation to the broader social, historical, and economic conditions of feminism today, i.e., examining and applying its major concepts. Keep in mind the broad concepts that we have been addressing across the readings (beyond sex and gender): embodiment (race/ ability), space/location, institutions/sentiment, ideas/material reality, power/love, etc.
Paper topics are organized under course theme headings. Drawing on both scientific, journalistic, literary, and artistic sources, discuss and analyze the questions below making sure to comment on the dynamic between embodiment (the body, the skin, the appearance) and structure (the society, the institutions, the language).
TOPIC:
The Project of Universal Womanhood: The old search for a universal position, a universal experience from which to build a feminist politics and ethics has largely fallen out of fashion. Discuss the promises and pitfalls of a universalist approach to gender oppression. Given the many criticisms and feminism’s championing of difference, can a universal approach still be desirable?
Research: SOURCES (VERY IMPORTANT)
While I expect that you will consult many, many more sources, you must incorporate a minimum of 6 secondary sources in your research project (this is in addition to any primary source from the course material you should be using at least one article/text from the syllabus). Make sure that you use a variety of resources, and try to have sources from the following categories (and use current/up-to-date information when relevant):
Recent scholarly books in print: chapters and/or excerpts are acceptable
Recent scholarly articles found in online journals through the OCAD Library databases
Recent texts (articles, essays, editorials, interviews, etc.) from other non-book print sources (newspapers, magazines, etc.)
Texts (articles, essays, editorials, interviews) from reliable online sources (this means you must know where the information is coming from and if it is accurate/reliable!)
Media (advertisements, comics, artwork, TV shows, films, music, etc.)
Other (ex: fiction, interviews, surveys, etc.)
