In this essay, you will create your argument, supporting it with evidence and arguments from the sources you have gathered. You will synthesize these other authors’ arguments in order to create the context for your own argument. It is important, however, that you create your own argument rather than just summarizing what others have said on this topic. You are also not merely asking a research question; by the time your FRAP is finalized, you should have a clear argumentative thesis that answers your original research question.
This essay will follow Toulmin guidelines. You should have a claim (thesis), grounds (facts, data, or reasoning upon which the claim is based), Warrant (statement or statements that link the grounds to the claim), Backing (additional support for the claim), Qualifier (statement or statements that show the limits to the claim), and a Rebuttal (the last paragraph before your conclusion should identify opposing viewpoints).
To begin, using the topic and preliminary bibliography you completed and create a list of points based on the reading you have been doing from your research sources. As you look at the information and evidence from these sources, consider how they affect your own ideas on the subject. You also want to consider your audience and keep in mind the different modes of persuasion: ethos, pathos, and logos.
