Becoming An Ally Assignment Guidelines
In this assignment, you will choose an underrepresented group that you are not a part of
yourself to ally with.
I. The first step of the assignment will be to identify a minority group to ally with.
Choose a group that you are not a part of yourself (e.g., You may be a cisgender man
who chooses to participate in a community event that centers transgender women)
II. Participate in at least 1 activity with that group this semester (it could be on Zoom or
via face to face ), and document your experiences using videos or photographs – you
must be seen in the photographs or in the screenshots of the video..
III. Make sure to get documented permission from a representative of the group you are
planning to interact with that they consent to being photographed and interviewed for
your academic assignment. I will accept screenshots of emails (these are preferred)
but you can also include screenshots of text messages. Please be respectful and get
this authorization before you attend the event.
IV. Next describe your experience and tell us a bit about the group you are choosing to
ally with along with someone information about the event you attended. Be sure to
also include photographs/videos that depict you with the community completing that
activity or event. You can do this via a power point or a single word document
(please be sure that it is either uploaded as a doc, docx file or pdf otherwise it will not
be readable on speed grader which could result in a zero for the assignment.
V. Finally, on a separate page or concluding slide, write a reflection on: a) how that
experience changed your mind about some preconceived notion about that minority group,
and b) how the experience shaped your broader views of others who are different from you.
