Both Tennyson and Eliot’s dramatic monologues deal with some profound topics.
“Ulysses” is actually an elegy written for Tennyson’s close friend while Eliot’s monologue addresses the hopelessness that is modern condition. Both have very different messages, to be sure. Discuss what you think each author is suggesting in the following quotes:
“As though to breathe were life! Life piled on life
Were all too little, and of one to me
Little remains; but every hour is saved
From that eternal silence…” – (Tennyson 24-27)
“Do I dare
Disturb the universe?
In a minute there is time
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse.” (Eliot 45-48)
