Task:
Choose one short story (not from the flash fiction selections) that you would like to analyze through the scope of “identity”. Choose one that has connections that are clear to you, and that you have an interest in. The short stories have all related to a theme of “identity” through scopes of religion, gender, family, culture, etc. Craft a thesis that highlights this identity issue and support your position by using textual support and the elements of fiction.
Considerations:
Consider the elements of fictions that were discussed in lecture (point of view, setting, tone, etc.).3 You do not need to address all the elements, but you should address at least four in the paper. Choose what supports your thesis the most. Be creative! Papers do go through a plagiarism checker, so please do not just use “fluff” from the internet. Make sure to conclude your paper with the bigger picture about identity in the story. Did the author emphasize a point that resonated well? Make sure to highlight that in your conclusion.
Building Your Support:
At least four elements of fiction should be analyzed with the idea of “identity” being kept in mind. Also, please include at least two outside sources (textbook can count as one), to help support your thesis statement. This evidence can come from outside criticism of the work, but it needs to be cited properly. Alternatively, you can give a more detailed definition of identity, and the type of identity displayed in the story, from an outside source.
