Exam 3: The Twentieth Century- Modernism

General Directions: This is a “take home” exam so you may use your book, notes, etc. in preparing your response. You may NOT use outside sources like Wikipedia, Sparksnotes, etc.
Please choose ONE of the following topics and write an essay of at least 2 pages. Be sure to
include a thesis statement and to support your points with specific references, especially
quotations, to the literary texts we have read. Please indicate in your paper which question you
are answering. Also, please use MLA in text/parenthetical citation with parentheses, the author’s
name or poem title and line number(s) from the textbook whenever you quote lines or passages
from the readings. You do NOT have to include a Works Cited page. Your responses are due
Friday, April 14, before 11:59 PM. Please upload your essay to the correct file folder in the

This semester we have a number of literary works by women writers including two of the
most important texts in the history of feminism: Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of
the Rights of Woman and Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own. Please write an essay
comparing and contrasting the feminist ideas of Wollstonecraft and Woolf. Be sure to pay
particular attention to their ideas about the education of women, which is a common
