Are characters frustrated by categorical assignments leading people to misidentify them and/or judge them unfairly? Conversely, when do characters freely accept binary identifications, and for what reasons? Some binary pairings are: Black/white, male/female, masculine/feminine, gay/straight, poor/rich, American/foreign, uptown/downtown, younger/older, certainty/doubt).
