Explain why the information in all of the articles is important to your area of specialty.

Explain why the information in all of the articles is important to your area of specialty. Synthesize the information – do not discuss article 1, then article 2, then article 3… This is not the same as an annotated bibliography (although you may want to start with that so you know what the authors/articles discuss).

Break the summary into appropriate topic-related paragraphs to help with shifts in focus. Use headings where there are clean content shifts and include only one topic about that content in each paragraph. Use topic sentences to introduce the topic in each paragraph.

Answer questions like these when you write – but do not use these as headings: What is the overarching topic that these articles address?

What are some of the similarities or things the authors all agree on related to this topic? What are some of the areas where the authors disagree or diverge in thought? What would the audience want to know about the relationships between these articles?

Show a clear relationship between the articles while comparing and contrasting the ideas by using reporting verbs like the authors agree, maintain, argue…

Also use compare/contrast transition phrases that show relationships like although x…., y…, while both x and y, trends indicate z…, etc.

Remind the reader that this is still a summary – remember that summaries do not include your opinion. Use reminder signal phrases like “according to Smith,…”
