King writes this letter while he was jailed for marching without a permit. He is in jail over the Easter holiday. Some ministers believed he should have picked a better ( more convenient) time. Others think protesting is a bad idea and he should engage in discussions rather than marches.
In this letter, King points out the responsibility ( as he sees it) of Christians to the larger society. King is sorely disappointed in the lack of support he has received from white churches in the South during the civil rights movement and he calls other ministers to repentance for what he ( King) sees as anti-Christian behavior.
