PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

OVERVIEW
The Professional Development Assignment is intended to introduce you to the process of
providing an annual plan when working in higher education.

INSTRUCTIONS
Faculty at many universities begin each year by submitting annual plans – describing what they
hope to accomplish by way of their major assessment areas: Teaching (writing a new course,
improving a course, improving student interaction, etc.); Scholarship (conducting research,
submitting material for publication, making conference presentation proposals); University
Service (serving on departmental, college or university committee, advising students, sponsoring
student organizations, etc.) and Community Service (volunteer work in church, professional
societies, and community organizations). At the end of the academic year, faculty complete a
self-assessment, seeing how they performed against their goals. Chairs and Deans then provide
performance assessments, based upon the plan, the faculty member’s self-assessment, and other
assessment data (student end of course evaluations, peer evaluations).

Draft a brief (two page) Professional Development Plan – comparable to what you would do as a
professor or professional – describing your plans and projects.
