Essay #3: Conspiracy Theories
Conspiracies: they can be as simple as a neighborhood association’s
scheme to rid the block of an undesirable tenant. They might be vast,
multinational organizations secretly manipulating political events for their
own gain – silencing those who get in their way by whatever means necessary.
Conspiracy theories can be
fascinating, frightening, and all consuming. On the opposing side, it is argued
that they are ground in desperation, fueled by rumors, and bound to lead unsuspecting
individuals into the realm of the ridiculous. Regardless of your personal views
on these theories, the fact remains; the idea of the “conspiracy” is here to
stay.
Prompt: Write an essay about
one of these elusive ideas. Your essay should be thoroughly researched and
articulately discussed.
Consider and include:
1.
What is the
history behind your conspiracy theory? Who is involved? What does the
government have to say?
2.
What evidence has
been historically presented to excite the believers of your chosen theory? What
evidence opposes the theory?
3.
What leads a “normal
person” towards fanatical belief? Note: Theorists often see authorities as
fundamentally deceptive.
