What a Research Position Paper Is:
The English 1130 research paper is a short (5-6 pages) argumentative essay that a) structures a discussion between different sources on a debatable topic, and b) presents its writer’s “position” (or argument) on this topic. The research paper must make an argument of its own (and not only report on or summarize what others have said). In other words, you will argue a position or ask your audience to consider a new perspective on an issue/topic of your choice. Your topic should not be a continuation of the issue/topic that you chose for your midterm essay.
