Preliminary Instructions: Go to page 457 – “Appendix B” – in Lewis Vaughn’s The Power of Critical Thinking, 6th Edition. Select ONE of the essays to read and address for this assignment. By now, students should understand how to identify conclusions, to recognize and differentiate deductive from inductive arguments, to reconstruct arguments into standard form, and to test arguments for either validity or cogency
Assignment: Addressing the below prompt, write an essay (800-1,000 words). The essay should be formatted per M.L.A. (one-inch margins, double-spaced, proper heading, proper header, etc.). If students use outside sources or directly quote from the textbook or the selected essay, they should cite said sources (works) using the M.L.A. style of documentation (parenthetical citation in the body of the paper, with a Works Cited page)
Prompt: Please write an essay (800-1,000 words) identifying and critiquing the overall position in the selected reading. Be sure to include the following areas in your essay:
A clear thesis statement that delineates your essay’s position and the line of reasoning it will take to get to its goal.
A summary of the essay’s main argument, identifying it as either deductive or inductive. The student should then reconstruct the argument into standard form – put the standardized argument in your essay.
