This final unit (unit 5) will comprise the last two weeks of this summer session. Unit 5 serves as your final. Rather than have a final exam, you will write a short research paper and create a final sculptural work in the form of a master copy with your unique influence and reinterpretation of the master work. For this final unit, you will select a master artist whose work/practice you admire and wish to learn from. The master artist may be any of the artists we have learned about this semester or this may be another artist we did not learn about this semester. The master artist should work in three-dimensional media and the work you select to reference should be sculptural (*if you select a two-dimensional master work, you must recreate this work in a three-dimensional piece). The artist may be alive or deceased. Any historical period is acceptable. If you have a question about whether the artist you are considering is appropriate for this exercise and project, please let me know. Part I of Final: Master Work Research Paper (exercise): After researching the artist’s life and work extensively, you will write a short research paper on the master’s life, artistic practice, and the piece you wish to reference. Try to avoid writing a basic biography. Include important and necessary facts but also include interesting and even less known information. *Ask you yourself these questions and cover this information in your paper:The idea is for you to learn in depth about the artist and their work, why they made/make what they made/make, what drives and influences them, how did/do they work, and why and how did they make the specific piece you would like to recreate? Also, why did you select this artist? What is it about their life and work that inspires and motivates you to learn from them? Why did you choose the particular piece of theirs to recreate? What about that specific piece excites you, challenges you, and motivates you to learn more by making a work of your own based on that work? I want you to attempt to become familiar with your chosen master, whether alive or deceased. Use this writing assignment and the subsequent project to develop a personal relationship with the master artist. Let them teach you and guide you through space and time. The paper must be a minimum of two pages, double spaced with 1-inch margins, and a header with your name, date, and assignment title. Give your paper an appropriate title. As this is a research paper, you will be citing and possibly quoting information from multiple sources (ideally). You must properly cite any refenced information, especially direct quotes taken from any sources. You may use MLA or APA Style Guide for citing. Although my primary concern is not how you cite or use the citation format, it is essential that you write a well-composed paper that does not plagiarize or misuse any information you source. I will be checking for this, so
please take this seriously. Include a works cited page. You may have as many references as you like – I will leave that up to you. *Please include an image of the master work (sculpture) you will reference to create your master work remix final sculptural work. I require this for comparison.Guidelines for Master Work Research Paper:-Minimum of 2 pages, double spaced with 1-inch margins -Header with your name, date, and assignment name -Title your paper appropriately-Paper must include information about the master artist’s life, their work and creative practice, and the piece you chose to recreate and recontextualize-Paper must explain your rationale for choosing the master artist and selecting the particular work you plan to recreate as your master work remix, what it is you hope to learn from the artist and their work, how you plan to recreate the piece and WHY-MLA or APA Style Guide citation format / Include works cited page-Word Doc. or Google Doc. format only.
