For this essay, you will explore intersections between marriage, parenting, and the female body in “The Yellow Wallpaper” in relation to the other stories and topics we’ve discussed in the first half of the term. You will be using the knowledge from your first three weeks of class to help you make connections and analyze the new story in a 5-7 page thesis-driven essay.
First, carefully read and annotate “The Yellow Wallpaper.” Identify connections with texts and ideas we’ve discussed previously. Note the things that stand out to you the most or that you think you have the most to say about. Then, develop a thesis making a central argument about how this text fits into our prior discussions in the course. Identify 3-4 key points in your thesis. Develop a 5-7 page essay that expands on those points with textual evidence and analysis – both from “The Yellow Wallpaper” and from the previous texts we’ve discussed. Think of this as an extended take-home exam essay.
Be sure to use in-text citation throughout to identify all textual references. Include a Works Cited page that cites the stories and poems you have incorporated into your argument.
