Description:
For this assignment, you will compose a multimodal essay/piece, utilizing two or more modes of
production (written, visual, oral, electronic, nonverbal). You will make an argument related to
our larger course themes: gender, sexuality, and literature. Your argument should be supported
by both your analysis and the research you conduct from both primary and secondary sources.
More specifically, your essay should engage in one of the following methods of argumentation
(though, in many cases, the modes may overlap):
• Single-text analysis: Analyze a text in-depth.
• Compare/contrast: Compare/contrast two literary texts (one of the two may be a text
outside of the course, and/or a non-literary text: a film, an album, an event, etc.).
• Concepts/context: Discuss how important concepts in literary works relate to societal,
economic, cultural, or political contexts, using evidence from primary and secondary
texts to support your case.
Your argument must be debatable and specific. Consider how to, in a relatively short amount of
space, focus your argument. Your essay can use primary texts from the course, other texts not
used in the course, or some combination of the two. In addition, your essay should incorporate 3
to 5 secondary sources, including at least one source from a peer-reviewed journal. You should
also incorporate correctly-cited quotations, summaries, and paraphrases from both primary and
secondary texts. Please use MLA format.
