Optional: Draft & Peer Reviews

Before Tuesday, July 13, 12 pm (noon):
Check this page after the draft deadline on July 8. In the sidebar, under “Assigned Peer Reviews,” you’ll find links to two classmates’ drafts. You should also receive an email notification and see the peer reviews in the “To Do” list on your dashboard. For more help, see “How do I submit a peer review to an assignment?”

or this YouTube tutorial for Canvas peer reviews

. Students usually spend ~20-30 minutes per review, so if you’re planning ahead, leave yourself at least an hour to finish both reviews.
Complete each peer review by answering the questions (in purple below). Just number your answers and type/paste your whole response into the comment box. You can also annotate the draft if you’d like (e.g. if there’s a section you want to highlight for a particular question). We’re not using rubrics, and please do not upload your review as a file (not all file types are compatible with Canvas, and not all of you are using the same programs). If you write your comments in a separate doc, just copy/paste them into the comment box.
To double-check your classmates’ preferred names/nicknames before you start reviewing, see their introductions here.
Peer Review Questions:
What is this paper’s thesis? Is it arguable?
Focus on the introduction: Does this intro provide enough context? Does it grab your attention? What does the writer assume you already know or believe? If the intro is not yet written, what context will this paper need?
What kinds of research does this essay demonstrate so far? Identify the two most compelling pieces of evidence or two places where more evidence is needed.
How is the paper structured, and what, if anything, would you change? For example, do you see any potential fallacies?
Describe the writing style. Consider: How does the writer try to appeal to you as a reader? What is the tone, and is it consistent? Which words are repeated most, or how well are key terms defined?
What does the writer do well? What is most effective or most surprising?
What should the writer focus on next?
