Your objective in this Listening Discussion is to choose a stylistic grouping, Heavy Metal, Rap/Hip Hop, 80’s Punk, or Alternative Rock (found below…scroll down to see) and answer the listed questions and essay prompts. You will be focusing heavily on the lyrical content, and you will need to write about the lyrical content of all the songs in your stylistic grouping. You should also be aware of the binding elements (image, instrumentation, song structure, etc…) too.
Within your chosen stylistic grouping do you see clear controversial songs, lyrical passages, or overall lyrical messages? if so, cite the group, song, and cite what you deem to be potentially controversial. [Lyrics for all songs can be found on the link provided next to the song title. You should open up a second web-browser so you can listen and read.]
Do you see any songs with positive messages in your grouping that could have been, with controversial assumption, censored or forbidden by parents? Describe the potential misconception by citing excerpt from the song message, lyrical content, video, or band/singer’s image.
Does your chosen grouping provide a clear/centralized or diverse lyrical message in the collected songs? If so, why do you think that particular (or overarching) message was important to the musician’s in the genre? If you see string lyrical diversity in your grouping, please explain.
Parental advisory labels have been in existence since the 1980’s, do you notice them when you purchase music? Did you parent’s observe them or do you you observe them if you have children? Do you think they’re effective? Please explain your point of view.
Your discussion commentary must include at least one citation from all of the songs from your chosen grouping (SCROLL DOWN TO FIND THE GROUPINGS.) Feel free to connect to other groupings if you want, but it is not expected.
[You must listen to all of the songs before progressing to the next module. Exposure, exposure! Enjoy the music!]
Each submission should be between 300-500 words
