This week we are digging into some very important Civil Rights Movements and examining how social movements have had an impact on human beings who have lived and who currently live in America! Nothing really compares in greatness and intensity to seeing what our foremothers and forefathers have gone through in their struggles for safety, dignity, acceptance, political agency, economic opportunity, and so much more ~ inlcuding their lives in many cases.
Your field work assignment this week is to dig deep into one of the social movements on a more personal level and LOOK (I wish I could turn those o’s into cute eyeballs!) at how one or more of the movements has DIRECTLY impacted your life. None of us has been untouched by these movements. By which I mean ALL humans who live in the USA have benefited (and continue to) from one or more.
For this assignment:
1. Choose a movement that we are studying this week that impacts your life and that you see as significant to YOU! (You matter and you are a historically significant person.)
2. Write down ~ bullet style notes that you freewrite about the movement, the participants, yourself, ramifications of the movement in your life, etc.
3. Write a letter to yourself as your own ally, mentor, or elder sharing from your heart the words that you want to hear around this topic. What would you have liked to hear when you were younger to give you hope and strength? What would be salve on your wounds? What could somebody who matters to you say to bring you comfort around this issue/topic/civil rights activity? What can you tell your future self to encourage your own growth and wellness?
We often don’t get to take time to heal. Dig deep and be gentle with yourself through this beautiful knowledge.
