A speech story is different than a breaking news story because it focuses on the CONTENT and CONTEXT of the speech and speaker, rather than just stating that the speech took place. In this assignment, youll get to work on your live reporting skills, including interviewing.
You will write a story of 400-500 words with an appropriate lead for a speech story
Your lead should NOT be a summary lead like those we’ve worked on for breaking news. Instead, lead with the most interesting, surprising or newsworthy element of the speech. Example:
Summary lead (wrong): “Prof. Indiana Jones gave a speech about archaeology on Monday.”
Content lead (right): “Nazis have systematically looted ancient sites of power, according to Prof. Indiana Jones, who spoke at the Armory Monday.”)
Write the body of the story in inverted pyramid, including some quotes and some paraphrasing. Do not write about the speech chronologically.
