Mental Health
Courts have been designed as a spin-off of Drug Court to meet the needs of the
justice-involved mentally ill. Each model is designed differently, and
studies tout the success of these programs. Critics note that the
programs are a way of further stigmatizing and segregating the mentally
ill. What are your thoughts and why? Use supporting

stigmatizing and segregating the mentally ill. What are your thoughts and

Mental health stigma refers to
public criticism, or when people with mental illnesses or who seek care for
emotional pain, such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or PT, are
shamed by society. Segregating the mentally ill means keeping them from being
around other people who we would refer to as people in their right state of
mind. My thoughts is that family, friends, coworkers, and society as a whole
can put pressure on people with mental illnesses. Stigma can also be
politicized by groups. It can make it difficult for persons with mental illnesses
to seek care, integrate into society, and live happy and comfortable lives.
In the readings, it says that
unlike drug courts, which frequently use punishment, some mental health courts
are hesitant to use it. This is primarily owing to the notion that people with
mental disorders are more likely to relapse, and that punishing them for their
mental condition will result in them being penalized. These courts provide a
model for a more compassionate, treatment-oriented criminal justice paradigm
that lowers recidivism rates, minimizes stigma associated with mental illness,
and improves the quality of life for clients when guided by an educated and
empathic judge and a strong staff.
I believe that the system should
keep the mental health courts that are designed as a spin-off of drug court to
meet the needs of the justice-involved mentally ill. I think they should keep
mental health courts stigmatized and segregated, because it might benefit the
people that are mentally ill. Individuals will receive far more treatment and
assistance while in the program compared to being detained because mental
health court is designed to target the needs of offenders. If an offender can
find housing, work, and financial help, they are less likely to return to a
life of crime. One of the key reasons for the establishment of mental health
court was to save money. The expense of incarcerating a criminal is tens of
thousands of dollars each year for taxpayers. Keeping offenders out of prison
and placing them in community-based programs saves a lot of money.
