Leadership Essay: How sports develops people into great leaders and citizens of the world.

Name your
belief: If you can’t name your belief in a sentence or two, your essay
might not be about belief. Example: I believe that leaders can strengthen or
hinder their followers…and here is why:
I believe that we are all leaders in our own rights….and here is why:
My parents provided me with strong moral character, which helps me to
become a strong leader. Here is
why. Something to this effect.

Tell your
story: Be specific. Consider moments when this belief was formed or tested
or changed. Your story need not be heart-warming or gut-wrenching—it can even
be funny—but it should be real. Make sure your story ties to the essence of
your daily life philosophy and the shaping of your belief.
Tell how your belief
corresponds to leadership. Remember, all
assignments should relate to course materials.
Make sure you discuss 3 course concepts that relate to your belief.

Be
positive: Please avoid preaching or editorializing. Tell us what you do
believe, not what you don’t believe. Avoid speaking in the editorial “we.” Make
your essay about you; speak in the first person. Although we know academic papers should be
written in third person, this paper may be written in first person due to the
personal nature of the assignment.

Be
personal: Write in words and phrases that are comfortable for you to speak.
We recommend you read your essay aloud to yourself several times, and each time
edit it and simplify it until you find the words, tone, and story that truly
echo your belief and the way you speak.

Don’t forget….all assignments are a reflection
of what we are learning in our class.
You will want to make sure your paper is formatted in proper APA and you
will always cite course materials to support your thoughts and ideas.

This paper should be at least 750 words – not
including title or reference page. This
is the one assignment that will be eligible for the EWP submission this
semester…so make sure to follow the guidelines specified in the EWP writing
portfolio as well as follow the guidelines in the syllabus.

Because this paper is about a personal belief,
it is ok to write the paper in first person.
