In the internship report, the student should:
• describe the assigned task, the pursued procedure and the achieved results in
detail
• outline which approach/es have been taken and why,
• point out if the project has been completed or if it has been developed to a
point at which others could easily take over. In the latter case, the student
should describe what additional steps would have to be taken to finish the task.
• The paper should be typed (12-point font), single-sided, one inch margins.
• A good internship report can easily fill 30 double spaced pages or more.
• The internship report is a written formal communication and should be free
of jargon.
• The internship experience should be correctly outlined and documented.
The internship report should be outlined in the format of a research paper
(abstract, introduction, results, methods, discusion/conclusions, references,
acknowledgements). Graphs and tableS should be embedded in the text and
the manuscript should start with a cover page.
• Spelling and grammar should be correct.
• References should be carefully evaluated and inserted at the appropriate
place in the text.
• Page numbers are required
• Plagiarism will never be tolerated
• Interns should inquire with their committee members and the course director if
they would like to obtain a printed report or if they are satisfied with an
electronic copy

Intern will investigate the role of autophagy in the regulation of host-microbe responses in the intestinal epithelium.
Using model cell lines and well-characterized gene knock-down approaches, intern will assess the importance of certain autophagy proteins (e.g. ATG5) on the regulation of cellular responses to enteric bacteria, both commensal (E. coli) and pathogenic (Salmonella Typhimurium). Intern will be instructed in basic molecular biology techniques, aseptic techniques and cell culture, proper BSL2 protocols for the handling of S. Typhimurium and derivatives, and methods specific to the analysis of autophagy and to the intestinal epithelium.
