How to structure you paper:
A. Introduction: what is your view, what/whose arguments does it rely on, what is the strongest objection to your view, how will you respond.
B. Part 1: What is your view and why
C. Part 2: Why would someone think that you’re wrong?
D. Part 3: How do you reply?
E. Conclusion: What is your view, how have you supported it in face of possible objections.
Here are some pointers on how to address this question:
· What exactly do you mean by psychological or bodily?
· What exactly do you mean by continuity?
· What is the best argument that you’ve found in support of your view? Do you like this argument (does it work)? How would you improve it?
· What are the best arguments that you’ve found against your view?
· Has someone formulated a response that you like to this objection? Do you like this response (does it work)? How would you improve it?
Some clarifying remarks:
· This is a HUGE question, and you’re obviously not expected to resolve this issue in a relatively short (1200-1600 words!) paper.
· Moreover, there has been so much writing on this – only a tiny fraction of which we have read in the course so far – that there’s no expectation of you to come up with a whole new view or anything like that.
· What you ARE expected to do is rely on the readings that we will have covered by the assignment due date, combine them, and put them in conversation with one another (the different authors often do so quite explicitly already, so that should help).
