HSC 270 Paper

You are to pick one piece of art that has a connection to illness (or condition) that is meaningful to you.
It can be literature, paintings, music, dance, a movie, etc.
The purpose of this assignment is for you to see how disease is viewed in society, and how the disease is a part of our society.
The challenge of the assignment should be to critically think about how the artwork presents the disease, and the impacts it may have (or had).

Paper Rubric: 100 Points Total

Introduction (10 points)
A brief introduction about which piece of artwork you chose and why you chose it. Briefly mention what disease the art represents.

Background of disease (25 Points)
Include the following in your background.
What is/was the prevalence of the disease?
What was the highest incidence at the peak of the disease outbreak, epidemic, and/or history (as relevant for your particular disease and the time period of the disease)?
What is the mode of transmission? Is it contagious?
What are the symptoms and how is the disease treated?
Are there known risk factors or protective factors for your disease?

Impact of the art, and its relationship with the disease and society (25 Points):
The main body of your paper:
What are the social factors contributing to the epidemic or disease (at the time the art was made or discovered more widely)?
Who made the art (and when!) – is there a known reason why they produced it?
How is/was this art received by society (at the time the art was made or discovered more widely)?
Who is/was the intended audience of the artwork (at the time the art was made or discovered more widely)?
Do you feel the representation of the disease to be accurate? (may be in 1st person (I) but 3rd person is preferred throughout the paper.
Can you link something we discussed in class to this art?

Conclusion (15 Points): A brief summary of the paper that includes key insights:
What did you take away from this assignment? (may be in 1st person)
Why is this artwork important to you and how might this artwork impact our society?

Formatting and Grammar (25 Points):
Times New Roman (12 pt)
Bolded headings like above for the four (or more – if you have sub-headings) sections.
Single Spaced (Extra space between paragraphs and sections) paragraphs; written in a narrative form– not a list of questions and answers.
One inch Margins
Page numbers in Footer
References, APA format preferred
Images referenced as Figure 1, Figure 2, and are displayed in the end of the paper with a caption e.g.) “Figure 1: Mona Lisa at the Louvre”
Approximately between 1.5 to 2 pages (3 page max) in length, not including images or references or heading spaces
Not breaking the grammar rules listed in the writing lecture
