Reading Journal Format- Use this as a guide when crafting a journal based on a reading.
When prompted to complete and submit a short journal based on a short story, use these points as your guide .Remember , your journal can be in bulleted format or short responses– no need for essay style:
Create character lists and notes on characterization; list any important quotes; explain the types of conflict presented; and delve into the author’s use of tone and irony
Make assumptions about the story’s theme(s), while providing a summery or synopsis of the basic plot
Observe any important symbols and/or symbolism
Think about all of the literary terms and how the author uses each technique to unearth hidden value or meaning within the
text
Finally, think about which elements appeal to you and why. Explain how this story makes you feel, or what does it make you think about? How are the themes relevant today?
