Students will pick one (1) topic from a those listed below. Students are expected to take a clear introductory statement on a topic (e.g., “American culture changed dramatically during the Jazz Age due to the forces of X, Y and Z.”), then support that statement using data from the textbook. Students should cite the textbook appropriately and include a reference section (on a separate page) at the end of their paper. Students can use the sample reference entry of the textbook that I have provided below. Regardless of what word processing software you use, the reference entry should have a half-inch indentation on the second line and be double spaced. In other words, it should look exactly the way it does in the syllabus:
Students’ citations should follow those used by the American Political Science Association. At the end of this sentence is an example citation of the textbook that students can use, with the authors, year and page number being used listed correctly (Krutz and Waskiewicz 2019, 10).
Please know that some versions of the textbook (e.g., the online version viewed in a web browser) do not use page numbers. When citing material in your essay, you must use either the .pdf or print version of the textbook. Students should only cite from the textbook – the use of outside sources will result in a loss of points. For a full grading rubric, please see the “Assignments” section of Canvas, accessed via the main menu.
This assignment should be should be a minimum of four full typed pages long and no more than five full pages long (excluding references). It should be double spaced with 1-inch margins on the top, bottom and both sides of the page with half-inch indentations for new paragraphs. Submitting a hand-written essay will result in a grade of zero. The font should be size twelve (12) Times New Roman. You are required to submit all written work in either .pdf or .docx/.doc format.
WARNING: Students cannot submit multiple copies of term papers; once you turn something in, it is considered a final copy and will be graded as such. Only submit when you are absolutely ready to have something graded.
Topic 3 (Chapter 5): For much of U.S. history, the majority of its people have been deprived of basic rights and opportunities due to their sex, race, faith, sexual orientation or physical/mental abilities. In some cases, Americans were denied the right of citizenship itself. While incredible progress has been made over the past century, the fight to secure equal rights for all continues today. First, explain what civil rights are. What standards do the courts use when deciding whether a discriminatory law of regulation is unconstitutional? Next, identify the three core questions that help us recognize if there is a civil rights problem. What are some ways to remedy problems once they are identified? Finally, pick one of the following groups and explain their struggle for equality over time – African Americans, women, Native Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Asian Americans, LGBT Americans, disabled Americans or religious minorities. What mechanisms and strategies did this group use in their struggle for equality?
