The goal of short paper 1 is for you to take a more in-depth look at a subject related to the assigned reading for the week. You have leeway in how you wish to structure your discussion. However, the first short paper should address one (1) of the following prompts:
1) What are some of the reasons why the population has grown so much in Texas during the past few decades? Write about some of the opportunities, but also challenges that come with this population growth.
2) Discuss some of the main issues that Texas and the federal government have disagreed over in the last couple of decades. If you wish, you can also discuss disputes between Texas and other states in the United State or between Texas and Mexico. Finally, now that Joe Biden is the president do you expect that we will see more disputes between Texas and the federal government? Explain your reasoning.
3) Write about disputes between the state government of Texas and local governments/cities in the state. On what issues have these conflicts revolved around? How have these disputes ended?
4) Texas does not have a full-time legislature, why is this the case? What are some of the benefits and negatives of not having a full-time legislature that meets every year?
5) How does Texas get most of its revenue? Discuss some of the arguments both in favor and against of having a state income tax.
The paper should be between 700-1000 words. The paper will be graded on the following criteria:
1) Quality of argument/summary (36 points)
-Does the author support their claims
-Is the paper written from mostly an objective standpoint
2) Quality of sources and evidence (23 points)
-The paper should include five (5) sources, two (2) out of the five sources should be peer-reviewed
-All of the citations listed in the reference page should be mentioned in the text
3) Style and Organization (16 points)
-The paper should include in-text citations and a works cited/reference page
-The paper should be written into paragraphs and include subsections
-The paper should be written in 12pt Times New Roman and be double spaced
-The paper should include page numbers
