Informative Speech
Overview
This assignment is designed to demonstrate your ability to create, organize, deliver, and interpret an
informative speech. The rubric for evaluation, provided below, provides all the requirements of the
assignment. Although you will be evaluated on your appropriate use of style, memory, and delivery, this
assignment is weighted toward the canon of invention (research) and arrangement (organization).
Here’s what you need to do:
1. Read this prompt.
2. If you’d like additional instruction or need help, contact your course moderator early in the
writing process.
3. Write a working (preparation) outline in full sentence format. This outline should be in APA
format (for citations and references; no need for cover page, running header, etc.). It needs
to have enough content to produce a speech that is approximately 6 minutes in length (not
less than 5 minutes and not longer than 7 minutes).
4. Research your topic and include at least 5 external sources of a variety of appropriate types.
5. Revise and copy edit your outline. Note that the grade for this assignment is primarily based
on evaluation of the working (preparation) outline, not delivery. You will be graded for writing
quality, which includes grammar and punctuation. (Recommended: Share it with a colleague
to receive feedback.)
6. Prepare a speaking outline. This one will NOT be evaluated by your instructor but will
improve delivery.
