Progress Report #1
Section 1: Understanding the Health Issue and Target Audience
For this section, you are to identify the specific health issue, your campaign seeks to address. You are to summarize existing literature and epidemiological evidence on the health issue and how it impacts the health of your target population. The section should address key questions including;
Ø What is the scope and magnitude of the health issue/problem based upon the epidemiologic evidence? (e.g. what is the prevalence, incidence, mortality rate etc.)
Ø Which sub-populations are adversely affected by the health issue based on the epidemiologic evidence?
Ø For this priority population, what are the key behaviors or ecological factors for which there is sufficient evidence to support them as being highly associated with the health issue?
Ø Review of Existing Intervention: Identify and review at least three health promotion or education campaigns (must be intervention studies published in a peer-reviewed journal) on your chosen health issue/problem (e.g. media campaign to reduce smoking among youth). Describe the specific intervention activities, the measurement methods used to assess progress, and the main outcome(s)/impact of the campaign (intervention).
Ø Note: Please find interventions that are targeted at your priority population. However, if you cannot find interventions focusing on your priority population, you may review interventions for your health topic that are focused on other population(s).
Section 2: Theory Application
For this section, you are required to select a health behavior change theory and discuss how the theory relates to your target behavior and its application to your health communication campaign. Specifically, this section should address the following:
Ø Explanation of theory selected. Describe the theory in your own words and the rationale for using it to explore the determinants of your selected behavior.
Ø Theoretical analysis of health behavior. Essentially, you should examine your behavior through the lens of one particular theory by reviewing the literature to identify evidence of the determinants of your behavior that are similar to the constructs of the theory you have selected. This includes describing in your paper how the constructs of a particular theory can be applicable to what is known scientifically about the determinants of your target behavior (e.g. substance use, physical activity, eating behavior etc.). This section should indicate your review and synthesis of a minimum of 3 scientific articles related to the use of the particular theory. Ideally you should use articles that use your selected theory to examine your target behavior. If theory based articles do not exist, explain the relationship between the determinants and the theoretical constructs. While you can use a theory in its entirety, you are not required to use all the constructs.
Ø Theory application synthesis. Based upon the nature of the behavior and consistency between its determinants and the constructs of the selected theory, provide an argument for considering the use of this particular theory for your proposed health communication campaign. That is, how can the theory/constructs best be utilized in your health communication campaign?
