The Baker ruling provides us with a summary a roadmap to how the judge in this case, Justice Favreau, considered the evidence and how she made her decision (yes, her). Notice that this trial took place in 2018, before Wells and colleagues issued their recommendations.
Suppose the Department of Justice reached out to you and asked you for your opinion on the procedures for handling eyewitness evidence. Specifically, it asks you to write a report that outlines what Canada should keep doing and what it should adjust/change/remove. Moreover, the request asks for you to use the Baker case to frame your recommendations. Here is how you might tackle this assignment:
Step 1: write 1-2 paragraphs that summarize the Baker case.
Step 2: identify the aspects of the collection & preservation of the eyewitness evidence that conform with the Wells recommendations and discuss how they mesh and why they are good practices (about 2-3 pages).
Step 3: identify aspects of the collection & preservation of the eyewitness evidence that do not conform with the Wells et al. recommendations (or aspects that were used that are omitted from the recommendations). Discuss the potential implications from the point of view of maximizing accuracy and minimizing errors. Use the readings in Module 3 to buttress your recommendations (2-3 pages).
Step 4: write 1-2 paragraphs that summarize your findings and offer some suggestions to the Department of Justice.
Write a 6-8 page (double-spaced) paper that brings to bear the psychological research you learned about in Module 3 to the Baker. In other words, apply the content from your assigned readings to this case, highlighting the factors (or phenomena) that you read about that are relevant to this situation.
Your grade will depend on how well you describe the psychological research and how well you connect what you read in the readings to this case. Be sure you cite your readings within your letter (APA style). Do not go beyond the readings in Module 3 to complete this assignment.
