Assume you are the manager of a factory that emits waste (air pollution) through a smokestack. you have recently undergone an inspection and are within the requirements set by the EPA for the pollutants you emit. You are aware however that there is a high instance of respiratory illnesses in the area near your plant. A new “scrubber” (an air pollution control device used to remove particulates and/or gases from industrial exhaust streams) has recently become available that could reduce your emissions even further. The cost of this new equipment is $1M – not a small sum no matter how large your business is – and you will have to lay off several employees to cover that cost. The profitability of the firm may also suffer due to decreased [profits and a lowering of the stock price.
In a 1000-word paper explain how you will go about deciding whether or not to add the scrubber to your stack. Be sure to mention topics discussed in both videos so that I know you have watched them. Please do not just start out with your decision but explain the process you will use in making the decision, who is affected by it and how you can justify it to those negatively affected.
Papers should be college-level writing and include an introductory paragraph explaining the assignment. Student should include references to both videos but citations are not required unless the student uses additional outside sources. Any paper with a matching percentage above 20% will receive a “0” grade. Due to the nature of the assignment and its timing, papers cannot be resubmitted. This paper is worth up to 50 extra credit points.
