Learning Module 3 – Sculpture
1. Sculpture works have several elements that are distinctive from the two-dimensional art works – full round, articulation, ephemeral, environmental, lighting and environment, etc. Noticing these difference, and using three (3) vocabulary terms or concepts from the chapter, explain why 3-D artworks must be experienced differently than we do 2-D. (250 Words) Reality through the arts by dennis j. sporre.
2.While it is not nearly as interesting as engaging sculpture in person, follow this link to the collection of twenty-first three-dimensional art works at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. There are 150+ images to view. Just as in the 2-D experience, be sure to screen shot/note one work and its creator that captures your attention. That is what you’ll use for your critical thinking response.

3. What is it about three-dimensional art work that seems to invite interaction and engagement in a way that is very different from two-dimensional art work? What do you notice about your response – what impresses you? Captures your attention? To earn the fifteen (15) possible points, you must:(1). Post a 3-5 sentence response that uses at least two (2) of the following terms/concepts from the textbook: dimensionality, articulation, composition, negative space, line. 2) Respond to one (1) of your classmate’s posts, each of which must also employ a term from the list above.
Your posts/responses are due Sunday, July 18th at midnight.

“One thing that seems to invite interaction and engagement in a way that is different from the 2-D artwork is the use of articulation and composition. The 3-D artworks such as sculptures have different ways as one moves from one element to another and how they are composed (use of color, mass and texture). The striking thing about the three-dimensional artwork is how the composition of various elements are presented in 3-D. I noted that my response includes some elements that are used in 2-D work such as color and texture. What captured my attention is the use of articulation to create a transition in the artwork.”
4. Choose one work of sculpture from the MOMA twenty-first century sculpture collection. As best as you can, using information from the site, and employing terminologies from the text book (materials, orientations, articulations, etc.), write a formal critique of the work that captured your interest. You should use the example at the end of the chapter as a guideline.
Please include the name and screen shot of the work you are sharing (that way I don’t have to go searching for each student’s individual choice).

Module Four – Architecture
1. Pay attention to an interesting building in which you spend a lot of time: your home, your apartment building, a classroom building, a building where you work, your church. What do you notice about: 1) it’s shape, 2) the materials of which it is made, and 3) anything “artistic” about how it was made. A short paragraph including each of the three viewpoints, please!

2. Answer ALL of the following THREE questions after you read the Reality Through the Arts chapter 3, “Architecture.”
1) What did you expect to learn from Reality Through the Arts BEFORE you read the chapter?
2) What questions do you have for Dennis Sporre AFTER having read the chapter?
3) What was your biggest “AH-HAH!” or discovery moment after you read the chapter?
3. Our third arts experience for architecture is a virtual tour of the most interesting buildings in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, following this link:
https://artsandculture.google.com/theme/a-virtual-tour-of-kansas-city%E2%80%99s-architecture/ggICWE8-q8_nJg?hl=en
As you look through the photos of the various buildings, be sure to note structure, building materials, function, context, space, controlled vision and symbolism, dynamics/Interactivity, and scale (the topics under the “Sense Stimuli” portion of Sporre’s Chapter Three: “Architecture”). Please take the time to explore buildings, and be sure to make a note of the building(s) that most appeal to you.
4. How does the architecture in Kansas City, MO compare to the architecture in your hometown(Thailand)? Share your favorite building where you live with your classmates, and respond to one (1) other response from you peer(s).
5. The inclusion of architecture in a fine arts and culture course is often the greatest surprise to students. After having engaged art theory and visual art forms, why do you believe that it its engagement belongs in this course? HINT: Use a concept or two from 2D and 3D to connect architecture to the other visual arts.
