Clytemnestra is one of the greatest creations of the tragic stage. Discuss her motives and her character in the legend with specific reference to Aeschylus’ Agamemnon: is Clytemnestra guilty of murder or justifiable homicide? And how should you judge the character and actions of Agamemnon? Is he the villain described by his wife, Clytemnestra, or the paragon envisioned by the community of Mycenae? Why were we given so little time with him, and have him die so quickly? Is the play really his tragedy, or someone else’s? Can the tragedy be for an entire community?
