This week we discuss two articles speaking about 2SLGBTQ+ and technology: Tran and Patitsas “The Computer as Queer Object” (2020) and Madison “Representing Bisexuality in the Digital Age” (2018). The first focuses on queering in computer science & the second how the bisexual community is creating visibility through representation online.
After the readings and lecture the result is [hopefully] a clear understanding of (1) how digital technologies can replicate social practices and myths related to sex, gender & sexuality, (2) How digital technologies can also help queer spaces online, (3) issues related to visibility and invisibility, and (4) some potential ideas of how to address discrimination, oppression, and inequality concerning sex, gender and sexuality that happens in digital technology.
Reflection Question for this Week: This week our discussions featured two binary queering categories: bisexuality and intersex. While reflecting on social constructions and performatives that shape sexuality/sex, which one do you feel suffers the most invisibility and erasure (online and offline), and explain why you believe this. Offer up at least one solution that you feel is beneficial to overcoming invisibility and erasure in both the digital and physical world.
