Paper 1 Paper 1 Rationale:
This first paper is intended as a “practice” in the academic style of writing you will use in the longer research paper you will be working on in the 2nd half of the quarter. In Paper 1 you will practice MLA style formatting, including quotations, and the use of sources (in the form of quotations and paraphrase) to support and explain your opinion. The idea is that if you are going to make mistakes in say, MLA formatting, it would be preferable to make them here, where they do not count as much, so you can then avoid them in the final paper, which is worth much more toward your course grade.
FORMAT
Length: 750 words minimum (longer is okay)
Double-Spaced, MLA Style Format, with a Works Cited page
(Works Cited page not counted in the 750-word minimum)
Include at least four (4) direct quotations using MLA in-text citation style
PAPER TOPIC
ANSWER THIS QUESTION:
Do you find Ta-Nehisi Coates’ argument in “The Case for Reparations,” convincing, or not? Explain
Your answer to that question will be your thesis statement. You will be writing an analysis of Coates’ essay, not the subject of reparations itself, but the effectiveness of Coates’ presentation of his own views. Do you think most people would find his essay convincing? Do you find it convincing? Explain why or why not.

Explain the reasons for your view using specific examples from Coates’ essay, and use one of the following essay as source (you can use more than one, but only need to use one) to help explain and support your view using quotes or paraphrase (even just referring to it once, would count). This is to help you practice the habit of using sources to support and explain your perspective.

Include the author’s name and name of the essays you are discussing in the first paragraph.
You can use both paraphrase and direct quotations, but be sure to include a minimum of four (4) direct quotations using MLA style.
