What are the institutional problems that this movement seeks to change?

For the past few years we have seen an increased number of social protests and organized activism seeking change within our social institutions: student-led protests have organized in favor of gun control, teachers and their supporters have organized strikes, rallies and protests while calling for greater economic investment in our public schools, the Black Lives Matter movement has organized protests across the country to decry police brutality and systemic racism, environmental activists have led rallies calling for political and institutional commitments to climate justice, and more….
Select a social movement/issue and conduct a little bit of research about their concerns and their goals. Consider the following questions in your discussion post:
What are the institutional problems that this movement seeks to change? How have these problems developed over time? Who has benefited and who has been harmed by these institutional structures?
What social institution (s) are they focused on and why? How are multiple social institutions interrelated, as it specifically relates to this social issue?
What institutional change is the social movement calling for and/or seeking to implement? How do they intend to accomplish these changes?
Social institutions guide behaviors and provide patterns of behavior which ensure stability, continuity and social control. As such, they tend to be stagnant, rather than transitional. Given that, what changes do you anticipate will occur, if any? And why (or why not)?
How do these protests indicate a changing approach to the social control and stagnancy of these social institutions?
