PURPOSE:
In this essay, students will demonstrate how well they have mastered complex and structured thinking. As in past essays, students continue to work on controlling ideas, paragraph development, and MLA standards. In addition, students will continue to improve sentence variety and style. Finally, students will respond to research and use citations.
READING:
Rather than any one required reading, students will pick from the following topics and do their own research necessary to write a successful paper:
Political Correctness
Pandemic Response
Human Rights
Censorship
Gun Control
Paying College Athletes
While it is possible to pick from a topic other than the ones listed above, students must contact their instructor no more than one week after receiving the prompt to make that request. Students will be locked into their topics after one week.
PROMPT:
You will write a research paper in which you make a claim about a specific topic and back that claim up with evidence and reasoning. You can consult the Purdue OWL at https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/658/1/ for more information about writing an argumentative research paper.
REQUIREMENTS:
The final draft will be 1,800-2,100 words, not counting the Works Cited page, typed, in MLA format, written in third person, with a minimum of six sources (two must be scholarly journal articles and one must be from a book), with proper in-text citations where appropriate.
GRADING:
Your essay will be scored on a combination of ideas, development, organization, style & mechanics, as well as format, for a total of 100 points possible, see rubric.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS:
This essay is difficult by definition and design. However, it’s not impossible. The only way to guarantee a failing grade is to start too late, fall behind, or not contact your instructor.
