Theory to Practice Case Study-Mandated Prerequisite

THEORY TO PRACTICE CASE – 30% – DUE: MONDAY, JULY 31 @ 11:59 pm, CDT
Analyze the case: “Mandated Prerequisite” (the case will be distributed under separate cover). In your analysis, ensure you respond to all questions in a maximum of 8 pages. In addition, ensure your response integrates relevant literature as appropriate from the text or supplemental reading. Papers should be double-spaced, have page numbers, headings, and use 12 pt font.
With a case analysis, the questions do not need to be restated but should flow as part of the narrative. Because this is an 8-page paper, plan to use headings accordingly to provide a flow for the reader. There is no right or wrong answer as long as you support your responses with a logical explanation (i.e., research). Review the tips for a good case analysis to provide some guidance.
What is the issue(s) or problems(s) presented in this case? Be specific. (As you discuss the issue/problem, remember it is unnecessary to restate or summarize the problem presented and get right to the point! )
Thinking of mandatory general studies requirements for first-year students, explain how Taylor’s situation may or may not differ from a first-year English major who does not want to take a math class because there is no perceived benefit?
How can the institution accommodate students who oppose the religion course? Discuss how Leland can integrate the material for the religion course into the curriculum to be a separate course.
Discuss how institutional type (i.e., size, location, Carnegie classification) may impact Dr. Thompson’s handling of this issue.
Discuss alternative methods of addressing the situation from the perspective of Dr. Thompson. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative?
Describe an intervention technique or activity you would recommend for both Taylor and Dr. Thompson. If you would include others in the intervention, discuss why you selected the intervention.
Using this case, discuss the linkage between college choice and student departure.
Reflect on the college student development theories you read about in Class 2. Select one student development theory and discuss how it applies to his identity or development. Note: It is not sufficient to say Chickering applies to this case and leave it at that, but you should explain why the theory is applicable in a few sentences.
To illustrate your comprehension of the theories and literature relative to student persistence, discuss implications of this case as applicable to one of the student persistence models (e.g., Tinto’s Model of Student Departure or Bean and Eaton’s Psychological Model). Be specific and discuss the theory within the context of the case.
