Using what you’ve learned so far in the course, write a two to three page essay (between 600-750 words) about your theme, introduce your participants, and provide a brief contextual overview of the group(s) to which your participants belong. Use the outline below as a guide.
Identify the theme that you want to explore: a) identity development (racial, ethnic, nationality) OR b) assimilation processes (if you’d like to explore a different theme please let me know)
How is this theme described in the literature? Provide a summary using relevant citations from the course material.
Briefly critique what you’ve read about this theme. Do you agree or disagree with how the authors address this issue? Why?
→ For example, if you selected assimilation processes, multiple theories address what assimilation is and how it works. One theory, segmented assimilation, says that immigrants and their children assimilate into different strata (layers, social classes) of society. You will summarize their argument (providing citations), briefly critique the argument (do you agree or disagree with the authors? Why or why not?).
(For this part I am choosing identity the article is attached)
Determine who your two interview participants will be. What country/countries is/are their family from? Provide a brief (no more than one paragraph) description of the respondents.
(For this part one of my participate is in their early 20s and her family is from Haiti and she is apart of the second generation. My second participant is from Liberia, he is in his mid 20s and migrated here when he was 10 years old. He is apart of the 1.5 generation.)
Using data from either the Pew Research Center, Migration Policy Institute, or the US Census, what are some important characteristics about immigrants or members of the second generation from the country/countries from which your respondents families’ come?
→ For example: many Vietnamese Americans come from families who settled in the United States as refugees; Most Cuban immigrants and their children live in or have close ties to Miami. Consider how these contextual factors (e.g., reason for migration) might have affected your respondent’s experiences.
