must include 1) a thesis statement, 2) proofs of the thesis statement which draw on the readings and lectures, 3) a brief conclusion. An essay is NOT a list of bullet points, or statements not backed up with facts, or a mere statement of random reactions.
The thesis statement should say how you are going to respond to the essay question. The proofs you select to explain your response should be drawn from the readings and lectures. It is enough to refer to specific characters, events, and/or concepts; you should NOT waste time by retelling a story in detail or defining a concept which has already been established in the readings and lectures. The conclusion should briefly sum up your findings as expressed in your thesis statement.
