Module 5 Discussion Forum
This is our History 112
forum section. We will make discussion posts here. Each week will have a
new section with
discussion prompts taken from our lecture and our
assigned readings.
Instructions: Each week I will provide discussion
prompts based on our lecture and assigned readings. The prompts are not
essay questions, but they (hopefully) serve to inspire thorough and well
considered posts. The key is to say something of substance and show
that you have considered the prompt. Support your answer, argument, or
observation with facts from your readings. No outside sources
are needed to answer the discussion prompts. Your focus should be on
using the class lecture and your assigned readings to support your post.
Quotes and paraphrasing require citations. Citing sources is not optional.
There is a 250-word minimum for your initial post, and a 100-word minimum
for your follow up post. Long quotes, compliments, and other filler do
not count towards the word minimum. The maximum word count depends on
what you are writing.
Write a response to a prompt, then respond to at least one other student’s posts.
This section is part of your grade. You can agree or disagree with the
other student’s answer, or you can add something new that is relevant to
that student’s answers. If a discussion develops then feel free to
continue. I will factor in all thoughtful forum participation into that
week’s forum grade.
Grading: Your grade will be based on the content of
your discussion post, and the content of your student response post .
Did you make a reasonable attempt to address the discussion prompt? Are
you just filling space? Can I tell you’ve read the assigned readings?
Did you support your assertion or observation with facts from the
readings? Did you cite your sources? Are you making a good faith attempt
to communicate or are you phoning it in? Are you phoning it in? Are
you?
Instructor Feedback: I read everything posted. I
will often join discussions, but not always. I will add historical
context, provide new information, and clarify misconceptions based on
student responses. Your actual performance on your specific post will be
private and attached to your grade. I generally do not comment on
grammar or writing styles unless they are hindering my ability to
understand your writing, then I will provide advice so you can maximize
your points. I am always open and available to give you more advice in
any area, just contact me and we will get you pointed in the right
direction.
Rules of Conduct: This forum is an academic setting,
so appropriate tone and language is required at all times. Everyone
should feel comfortable joining the conversations on this board.
Civility is required for sensible discussions, even when considering
contentious topics.
To summarize: Answer a prompt, post on one fellow student’s answers. Be cool.
Tips
Use a subject line that relates to your post; this will help create interest and focus for the discussion.
Write clearly and with expression. Communicating online
requires careful and concise writing, but also allows your personality
to come through! Though humor is effective and at times relevant in
discussion, be sure to avoid sarcasm, which does not translate well in
the online environment.
Be supportive, considerate and constructive when replying
to your classmates. Do not use jargon, slang or inappropriate language.
If you disagree with a classmate please respond in a respectful and
tactful manner. Any posts deemed inappropriate by the professor will be
removed from the discussion board.
Keep your post focused on the topic, relating any class readings and materials from the current module in your post (as applicable).
Proofread and review your response before hitting the
submit button! You have one hour to edit your response before it is
posted, then, it cannot be modified or removed except by the instructor.
Participate regularly. Improve your learning by being an active and
engaged student. Successful students follow and participate in the
assigned discussion throughout the module, logging on at least three
times a week while reading and participating in forums as assigned in
the module.
Module 1 Discussion Forum (10 points)
Writing Prompts
Discuss an
aspect of the Age of Reforms or the divisive 1850s that interests you .
Make an argument as to why you think it stands out. Support your answer
and cite your sources for full credit. Remember to respond to another
student’s post.
