Explain how the album Big Brothers is Holding Company ‘Cheap Thrills’ reflect Janis Joplin’s career and highlight feminism in the social sphere of the 1960s in America?
This assignment asks students to evaluate the social, cultural and political context of an important and influential album release (or a collection of songs) in the period 1900 to 1975. Please note: the artist must be different to the one chosen for the short essay.
Students should choose an artist from this period and examine their relationship to the cultural and social framework of their era with reference to an important or influential album. (If the artist did not release any albums students may choose a collection of representative songs.)
Students should analyse and evaluate their chosen artist in relation to their impact on music and popular culture and their relationship to the themes of this module (class, race, gender, world events, technology, religion, etc.) as they are relevant.
It is recommended that students seek guidance from the module tutor/s when formulating essay titles.
Check the module Moodle page for advice on well-formatted essay titles. Essays should be neatly presented in accordance with academic conventions. The work should incorporate the relevant course themes and demonstrate engagement with suitable reading.
Source material should reflect appropriate academic standards and should include material from the course book list, peer review journals, and other relevant texts. All written work submissions should be accompanied by a bibliography.
