Discuss how language policies and language ideologies affect
Spanglish speakers and bilinguals in general, using examples from course
readings and your own independent research. Specifically discuss
California’s Proposition 227 (Links to an external site.) (which passed in 1998, requiring all public school instruction to be in English) and Proposition 58 (Links to an external site.) (which passed in 2016, repealing Proposition 227).
How did/do these policies affect bilingual students? Be as specific as you can, using concrete examples.
What language ideologies do you think are at the root of these
initiatives? Make specific reference to the course readings in your
discussion of language ideologies.
Then, discuss your own opinions on the following questions:
How should schools support students who are bilingual or use
Spanglish? How should schools support students that speak
languages/dialects that are stigmatized?
What role, if any, should the government play in supporting bilingualism?
