COMMNICATIONS ANALSIS

This assignment is worth 30 marks (30% of your total grade) and is divided into 2 written sections worth 15
marks each. You must pick a single digital media text of your choice and use it as a source for analysis in
response to concepts from two of the assigned readings from class. Each section will be in response to a
single reading, selected from the lists below:
Section 1
• Nagy & Neff. “Imagined Affordance” (week 3)
• Appadurai & Alexander. “Creative destruction
and the new socialities” (week 5)
• Juergen Habermas, “The Public Sphere: An
Encyclopedia Article” (week 11)
Section 2
• Richard Barbrook. “The Californian Ideology”
(week 9)
• Shoshana Zuboff. “The Discovery of Behavioral
Surplus” (week 10)
• Mark Andrejevic. “Cutting through the Glut”
(week 11)
The digital media text that you pick must be different from what you have focused on in your previous
assignments. You should aim to write between 900 and 1100 words for each section. You may include
screenshots and format these sections as multiple paragraphs if you wish. Please be aware that in each
section you are responding to a different reading while analyzing examples from the same digital media
text.
Assessment criteria:
Knowledge and understanding :
Your assignment should include a detailed discussion of concepts relevant to this course that
demonstrates to the reader your knowledge and understanding of the assigned material, and incorporates
these ideas from the readings you have selected into your discussion. You should focus on your own
discussion of these concepts and apply them to examples in a way that shows your own understanding of
them.
Analysis and discussion:
Your discussion should focus on your own analysis of examples from the digital media text that you have
picked in response to the readings you have selected, and combine all of these aspects into a single
cohesive discussion within each section. You should avoid being descriptive and focus your discussion on
the meanings and implications of the concepts your are covering in light of your examples, and aim to
show your own critical perspective.
Academic skills:
Assignments should be written using clear language and carefully proofread. The only sources you will be
using are the readings that you have selected, and you must not use any other external source in your
discussion. Any material you directly use from the readings should be properly quoted and cited, in any
standard citation format (APA, MLA, Chicago, or Harvard).
Submission instructions:
You should submit your assignment in PDF or Word format to the appropriate submission area.
You should include your name and ID number at the beginning of your file, and it may be useful to embed
images to help illustrate your discussion.
