Cumulative Essay: Native Americans

Assignment: In
this (5-7 page) paper, you will compose an essay in which you will examine early
American history focusing on one of the assigned topics (see next page). In this essay I will be looking for you to
demonstrate mastery of historical methods (reading, writing, analyzing, using
evidence, etc.) as well as demonstrate the ability to portray an understanding
of the narrative of the class. You will only
use BOTH the primary sources AND secondary sources (including the textbook) provided
for this class for this assignment.

Note: You are expected to
present EVIDENCE (this means short quotes) from the primary sources but you
should NOT quote/copy (even if properly cited) from the secondary sources (the
textbook and source introductions) – in order to meet the learning objectives
of this course you must know when to properly use quotes (evidence from primary
sources) AND be able to present the information in your own words so you can
demonstrate understanding and analysis.

Citations: In order to avoid plagiarism, you
must be citing all information in this paper (not just quotes) – this means
that each paragraph needs proper citations (use parenthetical citations). Also, be sure to include a works citied
page. Papers without citations will not
be accepted. Here is a parenthetical

Formatting:
Each paper must contain a cover page, proper citations, a works cited page, and
be typed, double-spaced, have 1-inch margins, 5 (FULL) to 7 pages in length, and
use Times New Roman 12pt. font. I will grade you on the quality of your writing
as well as the information conveyed. The
Writing Center, offers free help in writing essays and I would encourage you to
utilize them as a resource.

Submission: Papers
must be submitted through the turnitin folder IN blackboard. Remember to keep your receipt – if
you did not receive a receipt your paper did not properly submit!
Each paper submitted must
contain the following (and it all must be in ONE file):

A Cover Page
·
5-7 Pages of Text with Citations (note the
5-7 pages does NOT include the cover page, works cited page, or checklist)
·
A Works Cited Page
·
A Completed Checklist (found at the end of
this handout)

In
your essay you must: (1) answer the essay topic assigned based on the
perspective of ONE group of people outlined below; (2) utilize context
from the secondary sources (including the textbook); (3) incorporate evidence
from at least 5 primary sources (one per time period/unit); and (4) present analysis
for 5 of the 6 time periods/units of the course.
Ø Essay Topic – Throughout the semester, we have examined the changing
contours of American Identity. For this essay, you will focus upon one (1) particular group of people and
discuss what identity meant for them throughout the time period of this
course.

Ø Context
– Each essay must also contain context from the Secondary
Sources (textbook and reading intros) utilized in this class to show
mastery of the narrative of the course.

Ø Evidence
– Each
essay must contain evidence from at least five (5) different written primary
sources – one for each time period.
Note when incorporating the sources, you must discuss them intelligently
and tie them to your essay thesis – do not just “name drop.” You may only use the primary sources assigned
for this class (note the introductions are not primary source material they are
secondary sources).

Periods – Your essay must also present analysis from 5 of the 6 units covered this semester prior to this
assignment (make sure your essay has one solid paragraph per unit):

Organization
– Please organize your essay based on the following outline:

Paragraph #1 – Introduction (introduce
your topic and establish a thesis)

Paragraphs #2 – #6 – One paragraph per
time period/unit in chronological order
·
Paragraph #7 – Conclusion (tie your paper
together and reinforce your thesis)
You will note that I have left more room for your own
ideas in this essay within a rather broad framework of requirements – this is
to allow you to begin to formulate your own ideas as a scholar and I’m excited
to read your papers and see what you have learned this semester!
Grading Rubric – The following is

10/200 Proper formatting, grammar,
spelling, citations, etc.

50/200 Accuracy and Development of the Topic/Context
