Paper #2: Qualitative Research Methods – Semi-Structured Interview (5 Pages, 12-Point Font, Double Spaced, Times New Roman)Instructions: Interview an individual who you would like to know more about. This person can be affiliated with a particular group of interest, have unique experiences in life, someone who you admire, relative, friend, etc. ______________________________________________________________________________STEP 0: Preliminary Process (Note Taking) *It is important to get permission from your person of interest first before conducting the interview. Also, if the individual would like to remain anonymous, please give them a pseudonym/alias (ie. John, Jill, etc.) 1) Compile a list of 20-30 questions for your interviewee. This will also serve as an organizational guide and flow for your interview.2) Take notes during the interview (ie. FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, etc.). These can be done through handwritten notes and/or voice recorder or voice recording app.3) Type up your hand written notes and/or voice recordings into a printed form in preparation for the “Body” portion of the assignment (This is essentially “STEP 2”).______________________________________________________________________________STEP 1: Introduction (1 page) This serves as an organizational structure for not only the interviewer, but also the interviewee. Give a general overview of what you will expect to cover during the interview. (Sample Questions Below)—> Who are you interviewing?—> Give some background information about your interviewee.—> Why are you interviewing this person?—> What insights do you hope to gain by interviewing this person?—> What themes/subject matters will you likely explore during the interview?—> What answers will you hope to obtain?
STEP 2: Body (3 pages) Use open-ended questions (What?, When?, Why?, How?, Who?) to structure and organize the majority of your interview. However, you can also use close-ended questions (Yes or No, One-word answers) when appropriate. This is where you explore the themes/subject matters in detail by the use of your questions. * Use ( ) for your thought process and “quotations” for both parties. ** You can use this Q & A format for 3 pages. EXAMPLE (I will now begin to interview Jill Jones and ask her some general questions about her background).IM: “What is your name?”JJ: “My name is Jill Jones”IM: “So where are you from?”JJ: “I am from Los Angeles, but I was raised in Dallas, Texas for much of my childhood…”(This is an interesting response. I should ask her to tell me more about Texas).IM: “Wow! That is very interesting. What are your favorite memories of Dallas, Texas.”JJ: “Well..there was this one time, at band camp…”(This final question will conclude this interview).______________________________________________________________________________STEP 3: Conclusion (1 Page) —> How did the interview go?—> What were the challenges you’ve faced during the interview?—> What did you learn during the interview? Findings?—> What would you do differently if you were to interview a different person in the future?—> Any other thoughts you would like to share in regards to this assignment?* If your paper exceeds 5 pages that is OK. However, you can also choose to edit your paper to a maximum of 5 pages. Again, totally up to you.
