Woody Allen’s film Annie Hall is broadly considered to be a great film, and surely it is an excellent example of postmodernism in popular film. But Allen, himself, is a very divisive figure – he has been persistently accused of sexual abuse by people in his personal life. Attached is an article, “What Do We Do with the Art of Monstrous Men?” by Claire Dederer. Please read this article and write your post in response to — or jumping off from– it. Certainly many of the filmmakers we’ve discussed this semester (as well as the painters and other artists referenced in passing – Picasso and Pollock among them) could also fall under the category of “monstrous men.” I am going to ask that for discussion this week we take up the very current and contemporary topic of how do we reconcile “great” works of art with the “terrible” artists who made them? How do you think we should discuss or bracket the personal (and often professional lives) of artists and their behavior when discussing their work?

As in all weeks, please carefully compose your responses and be respectful of the others in your discussion group. There’s no problem in discussing feeling conflicted over the issue or ambivalent about what to do.
