You may have heard the old adages, “Birds of a Feather Flock Together” and/or “Opposites Attract” like magnets. These both describe close relationships (we are not just talking romantic, but also friendships). The former refers to theories on similarity and proximity. The latter can refer to complementary needs and social exchange. However, they both are sort of opposite! So which is it, birds or magnets?
In this assignment, I need you to demonstrate to me that you understand the empirical research behind both of these ideas and how it relates to your life. You’ll want to briefly (a couple sentences for each) the research behind these two idioms.
Next, what do your friends think? Are your close relationships birds or magnets? You may first start by talking to your friends, family, or partners; maybe teach them some of what you have learned! Then see what they think.
Last, decide for yourself the answer to these two questions: (1) Which is responsible for forming relationships, (2) and which makes a longer lasting relationship? The answer to both these questions could be either or neither, but I want you to decide. Technically, there is a right answer, but it is sort of trick question; so I’ll give you the answer after. Oh, the suspense!
