BI 2318 Biblical Interpretation Paper
Guidelines for Students:
Based on the five-step interpretive journey described in chapter 2 of Grasping God’s Word, choose a passage of scripture in consultation with your instructor in order to write an interpretive essay. Your paper should be at least 1000 words (around 4 pages double-spaced) and should address all of the steps described in chapter 2. The Bible and any sources used should be cited appropriately in a works cited page that does not count towards the word-length requirement.
Your essay will be graded based on the following characteristics:
Comprehension (10% of final grade): Does the essay demonstrate comprehension of the text and general background of the biblical context and draw inference about the meaning of the text?
Relationship to Text (20% of final grade): Does the essay raise and explore important questions based on the text?
Analysis (30% of final grade): Does the essay demonstrate identification of relationship between ideas and how this helps understand the text as a whole?
Interpretation (30% of final grade): Does the essay demonstrate the process of interpretation of the text and how this relates to the Christian community?
Reader’s Voice (10% of final grade): Does the essay evidence the importance of the text and proper interpretation of it for contemporary Christianity?
